Midwives have been able to obtain new licenses for midwifery facilities in New York State in recent years.
But as the midwives were expanding their practice in the city, they also had to find a new name to describe them.
The New York Times reported in 2016 that midwives in the Bronx had to rename their clinic after their local midwife because of a lack of an accurate term to describe the medical profession.
Midwives are also legally required to undergo an annual training program that includes clinical instruction, classroom instruction and clinical research.
